Sideline Cuts

In the modern game of hurling skill levels have risen massively in the last number of years. Most notably the skill of the sideline cut has become very prominent in the game. There are a lot of players nowadays that are able to score from a sideline which is a massive advantage for a team. Joe Canning of Galway and current Hurler & Young Hurler of the year Austin Gleeson are the leaders of the pack when it comes to sideline cuts. For me it is an absolute beautiful piece of skill and extremely hard to master. The two men mentioned above have mastered the skill and execute it almost perfectly on every occasion asked of them.

A number of years ago the GAA brought in the rule on a trail basis that the sideline cut should account for two points. At the time that this was introduced not many players had mastered the skill, whereas nowadays there is plenty of club and inter county players capable of scoring a sideline. My thinking would be that the GAA now reintroduce two points for scoring a sideline on trail basis again. I believe it will work a lot better now as players are now trying to score from sideline and it would only benefit the game as it is one of the most beautiful skills to watch in the game. Colin
